Introduction to a Lifesaver Anime: Lucky Star

When talking about the role of anime in one's life, stories of how certain series have impacted individuals deeply are not uncommon. One such story comes from a period I struggled deeply with depression and found solace in an anime called Lucky Star. The journey from depression to hope, rekindled love for anime, and the impact of negative experiences with other series like Negima! and SHAFT's (Studio Shaft) versions of anime adaptations has been both challenging and transformative.

The Crucial Period and the Heavily Disappointing Negima!

Recalling the year 2005, my love for Negima! was at its peak. Volume 6 of the manga series was about to be released, and as a deep fan, I was eagerly looking forward to the return of my favorite character, Nodoka Miyazaki. Despite the first volume being enjoyable, her story took a devastating turn in Volume 6, leaving me extremely disappointed.

The Experience with SHAFT and Negima! Anime

When SHAFT released a new anime adaptation of Negima!, my hopes were high. However, my expectations were completely shattered. Not only was the visual style and voice acting subpar, but the plot and character designs were drastically altered, especially for Nodoka. The character who was once shy and had short hair was portrayed with a phobia of men and had a radically different hairstyle and glasses, which did not exist in the manga. This betrayal in the adaptation process was the last straw for me, and I officially dropped the series.

The Impact on My Mindset and Life

The disheartening experience with Negima! did not just end with the anime adaptation. It left a significant impact on my interest in anime and manga. Having invested a considerable amount of money in the series, including buying the manga volumes and the DVD box set, I felt immense disappointment and, ultimately, a deep sense of loss. This led to an emotional and prolonged period of depression where I didn’t watch any anime or TV, ate less, slept more, and lost interest in all aspects of entertainment, nearly swearing off anime altogether.

The Turning Point: Merophie's Lucky Star

Then, in April 2007, Lucky Star was released, and it brought a glimmer of hope into my life. The series immediately caught my attention, and I began to watch it every week, thanks to the episodes being available on YouTube. The character Merophie's Tsukasa Hiiragi, with her distinct hairstyle, quickly became my favorite. More than just a plot or character, Lucky Star rekindled my passion for anime and reignited my love for Negima!, which I had nearly given up on. It was a turning point that helped me overcome my depression, and to this day, I remain grateful to Lucky Star and Kyoto Animation for providing me with the much-needed relief.

The Aftermath and Impact on My Life Choices

Since then, I have been an even stronger supporter of Kyoto Animation, particularly in times of their struggle, such as after the 2019 arson attack. I donate to their fundraising efforts because, without them, I wouldn't have found the escape and solace that Lucky Star provided during a difficult period of my life.

While the feelings of betrayal from previous anime experiences, particularly SHAFT, especially towards Negima!, still run deep, I have learned to let it go. Although 14 years have passed, the enduring impact of Lucky Star on my life is a testament to the power of anime to heal and transform.

As for SHAFT, my ultimate decision to never return to their work stands as a lasting testament to the importance of maintaining integrity and authenticity in anime adaptations.
