While there is a certain degree of luck involved, inheriting strong genes and good health from our ancestors can certainly lay a foundation for a long and healthy life. However, it is crucial to capitalize on this advantage by leading a healthy lifestyle. Abuse of drugs and alcohol, smoking, and unhealthy habits can significantly diminish one's lifespan. Instead, focus on maintaining a balanced diet, staying active through regular exercise, and engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment.

Mental and Spiritual Well-being

Mental and spiritual health are just as important as physical health in maintaining a strong and resilient body. Stress and negative attitudes can have a detrimental effect on one's overall well-being. It is essential to develop a positive mindset, reduce complaints and bitching, and take interest in personal hobbies and activities. Moreover, maintaining a supportive network of friends can provide comfort and encouragement.

Commitment and Relationships

A strong and committed relationship can be a cornerstone of longevity and happiness. My grandparents’ story is a perfect example. They lived to be 94 and 96, with my grandfather never needing medical attention other than during his service. My grandmother was diagnosed with colon cancer but remained cancer-free after surgery. The secret to their good health and longevity, in my opinion, was their love and commitment to each other. Marriage and a partner can provide emotional support, security, and companionship throughout life.

Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Habits

Their diet also played a critical role in their well-being. Home-cooked meals and balanced nutrition are essential for maintaining good health. Regular mealtimes and the habit of sitting down to eat together, especially as a family, can foster a sense of unity and health. My grandparents always had dinner together, which was a regular ritual in our household.

Ageing well is not just about physical health but also about happiness, relationships, and healthy habits. By embracing a lifestyle that includes nutritious food, regular exercise, emotional support, and a positive attitude, we can enhance our quality of life and enjoy a fulfilling existence. Remember, you are the only person who can make the changes needed to turn each day into a celebration of life.
