Marvel Cinematic Universe: My Top Picks and Why

As a longtime fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I have seen a range of films from those that are simply good to those that are exceptionally excellent. However, there are a few MCU movies that stand out as my personal favorites, and they all have something unique that resonates with me.

I will be sharing my thoughts on five of my favorite MCU films, detailing why I enjoy them and addressing some of the controversies surrounding them. So, let us dive in and explore the reasons behind my preference for the best of the best in the MCU.

1. Doctor Strange

My top pick on this list is Doctor Strange, a film that truly breaks the mold of the typical ‘punch, kill, repeat’ formula. As a film that defies convention, Doctor Strange focuses on the narrative arc of a brilliant surgeon who becomes a sorcerer. This transformation from arrogance to humility, trading lives for glory, to the point of being willing to sacrifice himself multiple times to save someone else, is both thrilling and deeply affecting.

What truly sets Doctor Strange apart in the MCU is the rich lore introduced in the film. The Ancient One, in particular, is one of my favorite characters, and she brings an element of fear and awe to the story. Her presence adds depth and complexity to the narrative, making it one of the more memorable parts of the franchise.

2. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Another film that tops my list is Spider-Man: No Way Home. The multiverse storyline, while complex, offers a unique and engaging concept. Despite my personal doubts about the multiverse, the film successfully executes the idea, resulting in a fascinating narrative. The characters, including Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, and Lizard, provide a compelling conflict for our hero.

The film also features a multiverse of Spider-Men, and the inclusion of Ned, a character who can do magic, adds an interesting twist to the story. Additionally, the ultimate battle against another version of Strange is a thrilling climax, solidifying this film as one of the best in the MCU.

3. Eternals

The film that comes in third place for me is Eternals. Despite the backlash and criticism, I found this movie to be captivating from start to finish. Its slower pace and less conventional action sequences were not a deterrent for me; rather, they provided a unique viewing experience. The film introduces a plethora of new and interesting characters, including empathetic Eternal Sersi, who quickly became one of my favorite MCU characters due to her empathetic nature. The inclusion of a psychotic Celestial called Arishem and a race of monsters adds an exciting and imposing element to the narrative.

While others describe the film as boring and robotic, my experience was quite the opposite. I was engrossed throughout the movie, and the emotional climax, which left me in tears, was a powerful finale to the film.

4. Winter Soldier

Another film that I highly enjoyed is The Winter Soldier. This film is frequently rated as the best in the MCU, and for good reason. It maintains a consistent level of quality in every aspect; from the take-over of SHIELD by an organization believed to be destroyed, to the exposure of Bucky Barnes as an unstoppable Russian assassin, the plot twists are thrilling.

Notably, the first fight between Captain America and the Winter Soldier is one of the best in the MCU to date. The plot twist that unravels the mysteries of Bucky Barnes and his connection to the Winter Soldier is well-executed and adds a layer of intrigue to the story.

5. Captain Marvel

Lastly, I would like to discuss Captain Marvel. Despite the controversy surrounding this film, I must admit that I am one of the few who finds it a unique and captivating experience. I do not share the negative sentiments towards Captain Marvel's lead actress or the storyline being 'boring'. From my perspective, the development of Carol Danvers is interesting, and her portrayal is thrilling, even with her powers being deemed 'overpowered'.

That said, it's worth noting that powerful characters like Hela and Doctor Strange also have similar traits, but they do not receive the same criticism. This is because the portrayal of Carol Danvers is more relatable and human, making her struggles and development more impressive.

Conclusion

From my perspective, these films stand out as the best of the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, each for their unique reasons. While some may find certain aspects of these films unappealing or challenging, they offer a compelling and enriching experience that separates them from the rest.
