Pattinson's Batman: A Refreshing Take on DC's Dark Knight
No one thought he could do it so well. I was pleasantly surprised. Crime procedural meets DC, which actually does stand for Detective Comics. Robert Pattinson's portrayal of the Dark Knight has given audiences a new perspective on what Batman should be.
The Verdict on Pattinson's Physical Appearance
First gripe was he wasn’t chiseled and big enough. Bullshit. I’ve trained at combat sports my entire life, including MMA, and there's a reason they say 'lean, mean fighting machine.' It's because a lean guy can fight all night. Robert Pattinson took up combat sports and achieved the build. It wasn’t large, it was accurate. I’m about 6’3” in timberlands so his height in the bat suit complete with combat boots is about accurate to make him look imposing.
Batman as a Detective
But it isn’t just about his physique; Gotham City’s detective is back. Batman is a detective. He appears at a crime scene and is formidable in that regard. Wiz Khalifa before and after MMA? You know who I mean. His body spread out so evenly that there is now space between all his tattoos. Batman would look like this. Not Arnold Schwarzenegger. His hands would fly endlessly; every breath would cost someone something because it costs him something. Any fighter understands. Gym muscles are nice to look at, but I'll kick your ass.
Job Performance: Vengeful and Tough
The Penguin sees him fighting in his club and says, "You’re everything they say you are ain’t cha." Batman is brilliant and tough. How can this man fail to pull off both tasks in this film?
Is he a little gothic? Absolutely. It's because Bruce Wayne is the alter ego and Batman bleeds through it. He surveils, he stalks, and he strikes. When he appears suddenly to save Catwoman, it turns out her father is a strangler of women and attempts to strangle her. It almost looks like a horror movie when he dispatches the armed men in a dark hallway. You catch glimpses of his brutality, but it's meant to be understood as to who he is. He is vengeance.
The Musical Choice
Not to mention, you can’t help but talk about the use of the suicidal Kurt Cobain’s tragic music in relation to the damaged caped crusader. They modeled the new Batman after him. Cobain’s music adds an emotional depth, connecting the viewer to Batman's dark and complex psyche.
Good movie though. A refreshing take on the iconic character. Robert Pattinson’s performance, combined with the gritty and authentic setting, offers a new dimension to the Batman series that is worth exploring.
