Shuri as Black Panther: A Feasibility and Fan Perspective

The question of whether Shuri should replace T'Challa as the Black Panther has been a topic of much debate among fans. This shift would not come without challenges, but it also presents opportunities for exploration and storytelling depth.

Current Status and Fan Reactions

In the upcoming Avengers films where T'Challa is put on a royal throne, it has been suggested that Shuri could take up the mantle of Black Panther. However, this concept has met with mixed reactions from fans. Some feel that Shuri, with her own unique abilities and background, could bring a fresh perspective to the character. Others argue that such a change would be too radical, especially considering the long-standing tradition of T'Challa as the face of Black Panther.

One fan voice, speaking from a position deeply invested in the representation of black men, expressed concern about the shift. The fan, recalling years of waiting to see a black superhero, emphasizes the importance of elevating black men as superheroes:

I hope not. She can be Shurri. She can do her own thing. Personally I don’t like all of this gender fluid stuff. I've been waiting since 1966 for this character to emerge. For years I had to sacrifice my melanin on the altar of my testosterone and I’m tired of it. I want to see black men elevated. I’ve got nothing against seeing black women elevated to greatness, but not at the expense of black men.

Potential Alternatives

Another proposed solution suggests that rather than recasting T'Challa, the MCU could introduce a new character to take the role of Black Panther. A potential candidate mentioned is Ororo Munro, better known as Storm, a powerful and established figure in the Marvel Universe. Supporters of this idea emphasize her combat skills and strong character arc, making her a compelling choice for the role:

I would say if you wanted to put one of the Wakandan women as the new Black Panther, Okoye or Nakia would make much better choices. They are both already established as capable fighters. Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, probably barely weighs 100 pounds. She is great as Shuri, but I don’t see her being believable in the kind of fights Black Panther is supposed to be able to handle.

The discussion also brings up the possibility of recasting T'Challa due to the death of Chadwick Boseman. While it was ultimately decided not to recast him, fans wonder what the impact would be if such a decision was made:

I would vote for Okoye. But given the choice, I would re-cast T'Challa. Roles have been recast before due to an actor’s death and they will again. As good a job as he did, there is no reason Chadwick Boseman is the only man ever allowed to play T'Challa.

Comic Canon and Future Possibilities

Some references to comic canon also exist, suggesting that in the past, Shuri has indeed taken on the mantle of Black Panther. However, such occurrences were not well-received by the fanbase. One idea posited is an arc where Shuri inherits the mantle from T'Challa, who then gains a new power:

That probably would be the best option—since the only way to keep TChalla as the lead character would be to actually recast him. It may not be what had actually been planned in the upcoming sequel, but Chadwick Boseman cannot help it that he was sick and eventually died. This is something that we will just have to wait for an official announcement to be made on. Kevin Feige is aware that most fans do not want the Black Panther to be recast, even if it has already been done with Dr. Bruce Banner and Col. James Rhodes. Surely Ryan Coogler will figure out a way to properly continue the story without its main star.

Another intriguing idea discussed is a scenario where Klaus' sister (likely referring to the character of Christine McCall, known as Banshee) resurrects T'Challa, leading to a revival of the character. This could offer a compelling narrative line while also addressing the need for diversity in superhero storytelling.

Weeeeelllllll probably not with one exception. It has happened in the comics, however it wasn't well received. And this is a shuri with a decent history and not a surprise shoe in like female Iron Man. But there's an arc where Shuri becomes BP while T'Challa takes on a new power. That's probably a movie worthy scene if milked enough.

Conclusion

The future of the Black Panther character remains an open question, with passionate debate highlighting both the challenges and opportunities of the potential shift. Whether Shuri will ultimately replace T'Challa or if the role will be recast, the narrative will continue to evolve, reflecting the complexities of representation in superhero cinema.
