The Enduring Magic of Tintin: A Nerd’s Journey Through Time

Introduction

Are you still reading Tintin, like me? Yes, and it's the only thing I need to survive. I first picked up a Tintin book in the library, and at 15, I was immediately captivated. The series, though almost 100 years old, continues to enchant me. I'm a Tintin aficionado, and I often find discussions about the series fascinating. For instance, his hair is described as 'ranga,' slang for orange or red hair, which adds a curious twist to the classic character.

My First Encounter with Tintin

It wasn't until I was around 14 that I was invited to a friend's house, where he had a collection of hardback Tintin books. The series was pricey, but it started a passionate journey into Belgian comics, also known as Bandes Dessinées. Prior to this, I was unaware of these art forms, and the exotic nature of the artwork and stories was a revelation.

The series offered a stark contrast to the typical British comics of the 70s, which were usually in black and white and centered around soccer or World War II. At the time, it was challenging to get hold of full-color comics. There was one comic shop in my area, but most of the comics were printed in a small format for lack of better terms. But I was fortunate enough to have better eyesight, which helped.

The Art Collective

The art was, without a doubt, the most captivating aspect of Tintin. What struck me even more were the detailed illustrations, especially on the full-page scenes. The level of detail was astounding, and it's no wonder that Tintin's creator, Hergé, became renowned for his linework.

Interestingly, Steven Spielberg had never heard of Tintin until he started receiving international reviews for "Indiana Jones." This highlights how prevalent Tintin was in the European cultural landscape.

The Modern Tintin Experience

Of course, Tintin is still being loved by people of all ages around the globe. The 90th anniversary of Tintin in 2019 saw a resurgence in media attention, thanks in part to a new generation discovering the books. From radio adaptations and Hollywood films to television series, Tintin continues to captivate fans.

Tintin's legacy is not confined to just the books. Recently, the prestigious Comédie-Fran?aise have lent their voices to several radio adaptations, drawing in new listeners. The 2011 Spielberg film and the 1990s TV adaptations by Ellipse-Nelvana are just the tip of the iceberg in Tintin's adaptations.

Personal Early Memories

One of my earliest memories involves watching Tintin’s short, five-minute animated serials on TV in the 1960s. This experience led me to find my first Tintin book, "Prisoners of the Sun," in my primary school reading corner.

It's clear that Tintin's influence extends far beyond a single book. His impact on popular culture and his enduring appeal in the 21st century are a testament to the lasting magic of Hergé's creations.
