The Unattended Crown: Why Becoming a King or Queen Isn't For Me

A fascinating fantasy often spun in storytelling is the idea of becoming a king or queen. However, when we delve into the realities of the role, it reveals the stark contrast between the glamorous tales we hear and the strenuous obligations that come with the crown.

I Would Not Want to Be a King

Is the allure of reigning over a country enough to transform a woke discussion into a historical duty or to reignite the debate on gender roles and immigration? Not for me. The Crown isn't something to be toyed with or seen as an easy escape from modern challenges.

The Life of a Monarch

Incumbent Kings and Queens shoulder the weight of their roles for a lifetime. This is why Queen Elizabeth II did not abdicate and why her eldest son, Charles III, will continue to carry the burden of his duties.

As a monarch, you are not just a symbol; you are the preserver of tradition, the guardian of values, and the representative of your realm. It is as much a burden as it is a privilege. The weight of public and media scrutiny, the ever-present criticism, and the requirement to maintain a formal, unwavering demeanor is more than I am willing to bear.

The Queen Doesn't Want It Either

The desire to become a queen is not always as grand as the dream. For someone like myself, the idea of becoming a queen is never a "Yes." In fact, it is a unequivocal "No." The mere prospect of becoming a monarch is fraught with peril. There are always those who wish to see one's untimely demise, hoping to see one's child, who is young and photogenic, ascend to the throne instead.

The Challenges of Life as a Queen

Being a queen is not just about the heavy responsibilities; it involves a life of constant media attention. The press follows every move, and there is a constant pressure to be seen in a positive light. You cannot express your true thoughts or feelings without fear of backlash. This is a far cry from the world depicted in Disney fairy tales.

Surrounding yourself with the formalities of being a monarch, from the mundane tasks of signing legislation to the grandiose events of opening new airport terminals and meeting foreign diplomats, is not my idea of a fulfilling life. It is a life where every action is scrutinized, and every moment is formal and structured.

Why the Unaccommodating Crown?

Instead of the crown, I would like to be a plutocrat, a wealthy individual free to do as I please. A well-known example that personifies this idea is Paul G. Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft. His wealth allowed him to live a life of freedom, doing what he wanted and living in relative obscurity, overshadowed by his more famous rival, Bill Gates.

Fantasy vs. Reality

While the notion of becoming a king or queen can be alluring, it is a fantasy that is far from the truth. If I could relive my decision, I would undoubtedly choose a path more in line with personal freedom and the ability to pursue my own interests without the encumbrance of the public eye.

In the intricate and often daunting world of constitutional monarchy, the crown is not a reward but a burden. For me, it is better to stay away from the spotlight and live a life that is truly mine.
