What Size of Shiva Linga is Appropriate for Your Home Temple?
Guidelines for Placing Shivalinga at Your Home Temple
Many are puzzled by the proper size and placement of the Shiva Linga when considering its installation in their home temple or puja mandir. This article aims to clarify these doubts and provide valuable insights.
Understanding the Importance of Shivalinga
The Shiva Linga, a symbolic representation of Lord Shiva, is central to Hindu worship practices. When consulting Dr. Amritpal Kaur, a renowned astrologer, paranormal and metaphysics expert, she emphasized that the Shivalinga should ideally be made of mercury to ensure sanctity. However, if using a typical stone or metal lingam, it is recommended to place it in a temple rather than a household setting.
General Guidelines for Home Worship
In many traditions, the statues of deities in household shrines should not exceed the size of a human thumb (angusta maatra). This is to maintain a sense of respect and proportion in worship. For the Shiva Linga, the height should not exceed the handspan (vita) of the head of the family. This handspan can be measured by extending the arm with fingers spread.
The Dharmasindhu, an important authoritative text, provides this guideline. The length of the Shiva Linga should be in proportion to its height. Both the Shivalinga and a Nandi (bull statue, which is the mount of Lord Shiva) are typically placed together during sthapana (consecration).
Proper Orientation and Placement
During sthapana, it's crucial to place the Shivalinga correctly. The Jaaldhari (thinner part) of the Shivalinga should face the North direction, while the Nandi should be positioned in the East direction, facing the Shivalinga. Prayers are to be offered as follows:
FIRST, pray to Lord Nandi. THEN, offer prayers to the Shivalinga. This is according to a boon granted by Lord Shiva to Lord Nandi, underscoring the importance of the Nandi in the worship ritual.
Conclusion
Placing a Shivalinga in your home temple can be a deeply spiritual experience. Ensure you follow the guidelines mentioned above for a meaningful and respectful worship experience. If in doubt, feel free to consult with a knowledgeable priest or astrologer.
