Review of the 2017 Power Rangers Movie

I love Power Rangers. Even during the franchise's worst years, I stuck with it. Sometimes, I wondered whether I should even be liking Power Rangers because, despite knowing how much this franchise means to me, I won't hide the fact that the shows are unbelievably cheesy. Even by kids' show standards, the production values are laughable. At least until Time Force, the acting is terrible, and the producers of the TV show just don't seem to care. Ahem! Super Megaforce, ahem!

However, when I saw the teaser, my balls were blown off! This is your take on a franchise about five teenagers in spandex kicking rubber-suited monsters in archived Japanese footage! Shut up and take my money!

When I saw the trailer, and arrived at the Zords part, I have to be honest with you. I was thrown off immediately. But I wanted to give this a chance, and you kid, not kidding when I say that Power Rangers blows every robot movie or Kaiju movie I have ever seen out of the water. Transformers franchise and Pacific Rim.

The characters in this movie, the Power Rangers, Zordon, Alpha 5, Rita Repulsa, everybody turns in great performances. The writing is solid, the chemistry between the characters is evident, and the action sequences are thrilling. Despite some shortcomings, the movie captures the spirit of Power Rangers in a compelling and modern way.

While the movie is certainly not without its problems, none of them drag down the awesomeness factor. The franchise is a part of my childhood, and the movie does a commendable job in paying homage to that while also pushing the boundaries of the genre.
